During my research on breeding, I discovered a journal by Frank Wesley Pitman. In his journal he discusses the horrific events that went on during slavery. Pitman explains how at first slave owners were simply uninterested in breeding slaves, because of the time and effort it would take for them to raise the children before they were useful. However when slave trade was abolished, and slave owners were unable to get “fresh Africans”, this inevitably led to the breeding of slaves. Though we have learned about slavery in previous history classes, reading about it in this journal showed me another perspective.
