“Russia Reports It Has A Plastic Transistor”
This article discusses how in 1959 Russia (USSR) declared that they had invented a transistor that did not use the material germanium. This was super important because germanium is not mined directly, and because of that there had started to be huge shortages of it when the manufacturing of the transistor took off in the fifties.
The main reason that this was so important of a claim was how this did not use any metal in the making of this transistor. Synthesizing the semiconductor material instead of mining it would mean an indefinite supply, but from a quick study of how transistors work I think that this is a false claim made in the middle of the technology race between the United States and the USSR in an attempt to claim superiority.
