Original Introduction 

Globally, trains and rail transport has proven to be tremendously successful and useful to many countries; for example, the high-speed “Bullet Trains” are extremely pertinent to cultures in Eastern countries such as Japan and China. Although great technological improvements and advancements have been achieved and proven the usefulness of trains and rail transport, one of the most powerful, advanced countries has yet to implement the technology: the United States of America. Historically, trains and rail transport have had a major role within the economic and cultural spheres of many nations, making them a focal point within the society. However, as societies evolve so do cultural perspectives which in return affect trains and their usage/importance or lack thereof within the society. Unfortunately, the unfavorable view that American society holds in regards to passenger trains and railway transport has limited its expansion and the positive effects it could have on society. Trains, especially in the context of passenger rail transport, are technology that should be incorporated into American society on a greater scale.

Revised Introduction

Imagine growing up around every holiday season watching The Polar Express, a fantastically enchanting children’s movie set on a magic train. That first interaction with trains sparks an interest and later a secret wish to ride a passenger train during the holiday season, watching snow fall while sipping on hot chocolate. Years later, the scene is set. It’s snowing beautiful, giant flakes and hot chocolate had been purchased. Dreams shattered. Railway transport has been shut down due to lack of use and safety concerns. Globally, train and rail transport has proven to be tremendously successful and useful to many countries; for example, the high-speed “Bullet Trains” are extremely pertinent to cultures in Eastern countries such as Japan and China. Although great technological improvements and advancements have been achieved and proven the usefulness of train and rail transport, one of the most powerful, advanced countries has yet to implement the technology: the United States. Trains, especially passenger trains, are an incredible piece of technology that should be more greatly incorporated into American society.
